Jia-Hsin grew up in Taiwan and then attended National Taiwan University where he received both bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in Entomology. His dissertation focused on the pleiotropic function of a peptide hormone on the physiological responses of the German cockroach. He is recognized as an interdisciplinary scientist with multiple research expertise. He did one year of research on the evolution of insect metamorphosis as a visiting scholar at the Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (CSIC-UPF) in Spain. He then moved to Cornell University to work his first postdoctoral research on the insect-microbial symbioses. Later, he did second postdoctoral research at the Academia Sinica in Taiwan and switched from wet lab to dry lab to conduct functional genomics studies in different organisms. As an assistant professor in the Shigenobu Lab, Jia-Hsin combines both wet and dry lab experiences to unveil the transcriptional regulation of the bacteriocytes that are specialized cells containing thousands of symbiotic bacteria inside in the aphids. Outside of the lab, Jia-Hsin enjoys reading and playing volleyball.
